The issue of sexuality and disability is met with controversy and discomfort, so it’s no surprise that people with disabilities who are LGBT+ can feel lost and alone within the system. This article will look at what we can do as direct support professionals to create a welcoming atmosphere and support the diverse needs of a diverse population.
The three authors of this month’s newsletter will be on had to discuss how to best support ALL of the people we serve. Here who’s going to be discussing this issue: Megan Abou Chacra is a research analyst at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and a research assistant in Surrey Place Centre’s Research, Education, and Evaluation unit. She has been working with the Health Care Access Research in Developmental Disabilities (H-CARDD) program for the past two years. Yona Lunsky (Ph.D., C.Psych.) is a Clinician Scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and Director of the H-CARDD program.Dave Hingsburger, MEd, is the Director of Clinical and Educational Services for Vita Community Living Services and is a well-known speaker, writer and consultant on the topics of disability, sexuality and self-advocacy.
