NADSP Policy Update: We Must Stop the Attack on Medicaid and Community Living

by | Mar 31, 2025 | News

The Trump Administration’s decision to eliminate the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and propose $880 billion in Medicaid cuts will be deeply harmful to millions of Americans with disabilities—and a direct threat to the essential work that direct support professionals do every single day.

This isn’t a policy debate. It’s a dismantling of everything we’ve fought for: community living, dignity, inclusion, and the professionalization of our field. Without Medicaid, there is no safety net. No housing. No healthcare. No jobs for direct support professionals. No robust and comprehensive support services for the people we support.

What’s happening is more than reckless—it’s cruel. And it’s made worse by the fact that this decision is being carried out under the leadership of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose family helped build the very foundation of the disability rights movement. This isn’t the Kennedy legacy we know.

Now we must turn to the Senate. We must ask: will any Republican Senators stand up and say no to this destruction? Will they defend their constituents —people with disabilities, their families, and our direct support professionals?

I’m asking you to act now. Call your Senators. Especially if they are Republicans. Tell them to reject this budget. Tell them to protect Medicaid. Tell them to protect our communities and our work and our profession.

This is the fight of our lives—and we need your voice more than ever.

How to Take Action:
You can use the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request.

ASAN’s Proxy Caller – ASAN’s proxy caller system is now open! If you are disabled and unable to make phone calls, you can use their proxy caller system to have a volunteer call your representative on your behalf.
