Our conference acts as the kickoff celebration for the 2019 Direct Support Recognition Week. At the conference, attendees will learn about best practices, share stories, network and gain insight to elevate the status of direct support professionals. We will also announce The John F Kennedy, Jr. Award for Direct Support Advocacy & Leadership at our cocktail hour reception.

Direct Support Professional Leadership Summit:
Pre-Conference Sessions

This year we are starting earlier with two concurrent Pre-Conference Sessions on Friday, September 6th during the Direct Support Professional Leadership Summit. Our Pre-Conference, theme is “Building Direct Support Professional Leadership Skills.”  Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in engaging and thought-provoking activities revolved around public policy and  personal leadership development. The concurrent  Pre-Conference sessions will start at 9 AM on Day 1 of the Annual Conference and conclude with a boxed lunch before the Full Conference begins.  To learn more about the Direct Support Professional Leadership Summit: Pre-Conference Sessions read below.

 

Session A
Topic: Personal Development

Direct Support Professionals Lead! 

If you are a Direct Support Professional who wants to build the leadership skills and abilities that you bring to your role and team, this session is for YOU. This session will offer you an opportunity to learn about your role as a leader, identify your leadership strengths and grow those strengths to look for more opportunities to lead.
You will leave this session with

  •  A better understanding about what it means to be a Direct Support Professional Leader
  •  A clearer sense of the leadership strengths that you bring to your role as a Direct Support Professional
  • Strategies that you can use to lead every day
  • Connections with a network of Direct Support Professional leaders from across the country.
This session will be led by the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities in collaboration with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals, Community Bridges Consulting Group and Hope House Foundation.

Session B

Topic: Public Policy

Direct Support Professionals and Public Policy: Time to Take the Lead

In Session B,  attendees will on focus public policy with interactive activities. The presenters will frame out the current key challenges facing the workforce and illustrate the issues with current data. The session will ultimately offer strategies for solutions to these challenges and help participants understand how to take on the challenges with practicality. Additionally, the session will offer insight into what Medicaid is and how it is in peril as it has been the past two years. Presenters will offer an overview to direct support professionals about the funding of direct support and disability support. They will discuss the impact that will occur if Medicaid is threatened and how closely direct support professionals RELY on this public money for their own employment as well as for their own personal needs. Presenters will offer personal stories about the need to understand how Medicaid policy is intrinsically linked to employment of DSPs and quality. Participants leave with tangible and practical ways they can effect policy personally.

This session will be led in collaboration with the Research and Training Center on Community Living  at the University of MinnesotaPHIAssociation of University Centers on Disabilities and the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals.
