Let’s Talk: The Art of Connection: Establishing and Repairing Rapport in Direct Support Settings

Aug 25, 2025 | Events, News, Webinars

Rapport is not just “nice to have,” it is the foundation upon which all effective support is built. This is especially true for individuals with developmental disabilities and complex histories. Rapport offers a path toward healing, trust, and personal growth. While building rapport may require time, effort, and intentionality, the outcomes (greater engagement, reduced behavioral challenges, and richer interpersonal connections) are well worth the investment.

This month’s International Journal for Direct Support Professionals authors, Erica D’Arpino-Sgrignuoli and Jessica Sanderson, believe that rapport can and should be taught, practiced, and prioritized. Through structured training, staff can be empowered to create more compassionate, effective support environments where all members feel seen, heard, and truly valued. In a field dedicated to supporting human rights and dignity, building rapport is not an extra, it’s the most important thing that we can do.

John Raffaele welcomes Erica D’Arpino-Sgrignuoli and Jessica Sanderson as they discuss their article, “The Art of Connection: Establishing and Repairing Rapport in Direct Support Settings” for this month’s Let’s Talk.

ASL interpretation and closed captions will be available during the webinar. For previous issues of The International Journal for Direct Support Professionals, click here.
