Jennifer’s Experiences With The NADSP E-Badge Academy
The National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) recently asked Jennifer about her experiences with the NADSP E-Badge Academy. The questions covered how she carries out her work as a direct support professional (DSP), the skillsets she demonstrates on a daily basis, the impact that the E-Badge Academy has had on her professional recognition, and how she gets credit for competency.
Describe the story you shared in carrying out that competency:
Cultural Reflection- involves understanding and respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds of the individual I support. The individual felt she needed to know more about the culture which in return taught her new things about herself.
Why is this competency so important to DSPs?
We work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and each one has their own belief or tradition. Cultural reflection is vital for a dsp because it encourages respect and is a direct alignment to person centered care. Understanding a individual’s culture context allows a dsp to tailor support based on each person.
How have you used this competency in your work?
I have recognized and adjusted my approach to respect the cultural backgrounds of the individuals I support. I’ve also adjusted to the staff I work with as well. There are staff members whose primary language is different from mine -English. I made efforts and have used translation tools to improve my communication with them.
How can other DSPs replicate your practices?
Learn about each person’s cultural background. Take the time to ask questions, observe the individual and learn about the individual’s culture. Adjust the communication styles to meet the needs of the individual that is being supported. Assist with activities that resonate with the cultural practices of the individual you are supporting.
How does the NADSP E-Badge Academy benefit your agency?
DSPs can improve their skills through the e-badge program. It is outlined to hold dsps accountable for their professional training. The badges can add credibility to the staff who participate.
How does NADSP E-Badge Academy benefit the people you support?
NADSP E-Badge Academy benefits the people you support by ensuring that DSPs are constantly improving their skills. Once earning a badge, dsps become more knowledgeable and capable of providing person-centered care.
What does the future hold for your involvement in the NADSP E-Badge Academy?
Hopefully when I complete DSP-3 I will be able to get a pay increase as well advancing my knowledge.
How has NADSP E-Badge Academy affected your professional image?
I feel a sense of accomplishment. I’ve noticed my team looks to me for further guidance or assistance. My confidence in what I do has been boosted. Learning more about NADSP provided structure for my professional growth.
How does the NADSP E-Badge Academy give you credit for competency?
The program gives DSPs formal recognition. For every course completed successfully, you earn a badge as well as our team supporting the program will announce our achievements.
Overall, this experience was very illuminating. I was able to learn more about the individuals I work with and do a better job assisting them. I also learned how to be a better staff member and be able to give the staff guidance. Helping them be better at their job as well.
