Webinar: Black DSPs Matter: Systemic Racism in US History

Last year, the NADSP shared a statement of solidarity to those feeling the pain of systemic racism and marginalization. We categorically dismiss anyone or any system that discriminates against people and recognize that a large part of our mission is to promote system reform. With this in mind, we have worked to create programing and information that is presented by people of color and support direct support professionals in the intellectual and developmental disability service system. The NADSP is committed to recognizing and enhancing the direct support workforce. The demographics of this workforce shows us that a majority of direct support professionals are people of color, particularly women. Our system of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has historically relied heavily on this marginalized workforce. Over the next few months, the NADSP will present three in-depth webinars looking into race and the direct support workforce.

Our intention with this webinar series is to provide awareness and understanding of the experiences that black direct support professionals may face. The first session will provide a historical overview to understand what race is and its history in labor movements. Then, we will shift our focus on the demographics and projections of the workforce. In our final session, we will work with a trainer to examine practical solutions and provide the necessary resources and tools for those looking to effect change.

In the first session, Dr. Juan Salinas of the University of North Florida will explore the foundations of Systemic Racism in US society and culture. He will offer a critical analysis of structural, organizational, and individual forms of racism that impact the racial minorities in the US workforce. This sociological perspective engages in a critical analysis of racism and its impact on labor and wealth inequality. It will also explore the origins of race and racism, modern racial ideologies, and anti-racism solutions to improve workplace relations.

Learn About Our Presenter: Dr. Juan Salinas 

Dr. Juan Salinas is an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at the University of North Florida. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University, his MA from the University at Hawaii, and his BA from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Salinas’ research and teaching interests include race/ethnicity, racism, immigration, labor, and health inequalities. He works closely with marginalized and immigrant communities to address their employment and health concerns.
